Truck Lockbox

Pickup trucks dont really have much in the way of secure storage areas.

This is a problem if you are traveling with valuables such as a laptop.

I like lockey things and minimizing potentials for stupidity so I wanted to build a lock box for my truck.

I started with 3 pieces of 20 x 16 x 1/8" thick sheet metal that I got from the local distributor for $110. One piece I cut into (4) - 4" wide strips to make up the top, bottom, and sides.

This gave me the entire main body, then I used some extra material for the hinges, lip, mounts, and lock flange.

I was able to use the factory mounting bolts for the jump seat and baby seat mounts. The lower bolts are made inaccessible by the body of the lock box. The upper mount, I protected the bolts with an extra strip of metal that becomes inaccessible once the box is in place.

First you attach the mounts to the truck, then you mount the lock box itself and screw it to the body mounts from the inside. It is a quite solid mount that would take a lot of noise and time to get into.

I did buy some velvet to upholster it with, I will leave that to later when I am feeling more motivated. Spray adhesive remains pretty stinky for quite a while. Double sided tape or velcro might be the ticket but really its fine the way it is for now so. (This is why I didnt grind the seams smooth)

Installing wide pieces of foam deep down in such as narrow box was actually harder than you might think. I can barely turn a screw driver at the bottom because my arms are to big.

Below are the build picts.
