Script Env

I have been looking for a nice embeddable script interpreter. One that has support for breakpoints and run time variable inspection would be ideal, but I could also make do with one that small and clean enough to add these things myself. I would exclude projects with JIT for simplicity and size sake unless they had a great clean API.

It should also be able to add objects to such as object.function so that I can add intellisense to my host apps. At a minimum it should have a callback to resolve objects that it doesnt understand so I can make the call for them in the host app.

It kind of blows my mind that at this late date there isnt a nice ActiveX control or C library for this already. (At least not that I have found)

The ms script control I use so frequently works for most things, but it would be great to be able to take it to the next level. The IActiveScript it is based on does support script debugging. Many moons ago I gave implementing these interfaces a shot in vb6. Definitely better done C++ without having to translate the IDL to be VB friendly. I have only ever seen them implemented once in project with Ken Foust's Citrus Debugger. This code however is circa 2001 and no longer works as-is anymore with newer MS script interfaces. (Perfect reason to not trust MS on this..)

A couple months ago I did this search and found some in .NET projects that looked like they had these features. I still cant get on board with using .NET though and having that as a giant dependency so I am ignoring those for now. Same for Java solutions such as Rhino. If I remember correctly I think free pascal has free pascal script component with debugger support, which is a possibility.

Looking around again today put a couple new projects on my radar:

I think I am going to start looking at script basic because it has support for breakpoints, variable inspection, and object members through namespaces.

Script Basic actually sounds powerful enough that has gears churning on some other ideas as well. Will see, really looks like an interesting project to explore.
