Schlage FE595 ProblemAuthor: Dave Date: 10.16.23 - 7:41pm The SCHLAGE FE595 keypad lock has a design flaw that can occasionally make the lock handle not work even if the door is unlocked. Note: Always try a new battery first. Even a battery fresh from the store may be weak. Even if it measures at 9v resting. The sound of the mechanism will tell you. If the motor struggles or is slow, its bad. Once thats ruled out then... If your lock starts working sometimes, here is the problem. Take the lock off the door and open up the keypad side of the lock. There are 4 star bit security screws. When you open this, hold it horizontal as if it was laying on a table with the keypad side facing the ceiling before you separate the halves. Otherwise some little parts will fall out. On the right hand side you will see a spring in a plastic channel. The electric motor spins this spring and uses it like a screw thread to move a plastic pin up and down in the channel. 
If the spring stretches or the pin "jumps a tooth" in the spring, then the lock will no longer properly function and you could end up locked out. Warning signs this is happening will be that the handle will not work at first and you have to wait longer before you can open the door and have to try the handle several times before it will open. To fix it, just lightly pull up on the end of the spring. If you watch closely you will probably see the center mechanism spring up to its fully up position as the pin clears the spring and the mechanism resets to its natural resting point. Now just carefully nestle the spring back in the channel and let the pin reengage the spring and you are now reset. This happens when you try to open the handle to quickly after punching in the code, and/or when the battery gets low and starts to move the mechanism slower. Over about 8 years I have had to do this reset twice on my main doors lock. Otherwise this is a great lock. Comments: (0) |
